چکیده

High quality, virtual 3D models are quickly emerging as a new multimedia data type with applications in such diverse areas as e-commerce, online encyclopaedias, or virtual museums, to name just a few. This paper presents new algorithms and techniques for the acquisition and real-time interaction with complex textured 3D objects and shows how these results can be seamlessly integrated with previous work into a single framework for the acquisition, processing, and interactive display of high quality 3D models. In addition to pure geometry, such algorithms also have to take into account the texture of an object (which is crucial for a realistic appearance) and its reflectance behavior. The measurement of accurate material properties is an important step towards photorealistic rendering, where both the general surface properties as well as the spatially varying effects of the object are needed. Recent work on the image-based reconstruction of spatially varying BRDFs enables the generation of high quality models of real objects from a sparse set of input data. Efficient use of the capabilities of advanced PC graphics hardware allows for interactive rendering under arbitrary viewing and lighting conditions and realistically reproduces the appearance of the original object.

Virtualizing Real-World Objects in FRP

We begin with a functional reactive programming (FRP) model in which every program is viewed as a signal function that converts a stream of input values into a stream of output values. We observe that objects in the real world – such as a keyboard or sound card – can be thought of as signal functions as well. This leads us to a radically different approach to I/O – instead of treating real-worl...

Virtualizing real objects with surface interreflections

In mixed reality, it is important to estimate object surface reflectance properties to render real objects under arbitrary illumination conditions. The authors developed a method to estimate reflectance properties of object surfaces densely. However, it was difficult to estimate surface reflectance properties faithfully for objects with interreflections. This paper describes a new method of den...

Virtualizing Sensor for the Enablement of Semantic-aware Internet of Things Ecosystem

The Internet of things (IoT) is a network of smart objects that bridges the gap between the physical and the digital world. The prevalence of IoT leads towards a new digital ecosystem for building novel applications and services. However, heterogeneity in devices, technologies and standards are causing to impede the widespread adoption of IoT. Advances in embedded service oriented architecture ...

Three-Dimensional Object Modeling - Towards Improving Access to Collections by Virtualizing Reality

The paper describes the recent evolution of a laser scanning technology which is used to digitize objects in three-dimensions with colour.Data sets are turned into computerized models that can be manipulated, displayed, measured, and compared, and which can be shared on networked systems. The technology should improve the electronic access to museum collections.

Hybrid method for full identification of buried objects and surrounding media

This study describes a hybrid technique for identification of buried objects. The object’s shape and electromagnetic profile are reconstructed from evaluations of electrical permittivity and conductivity. The method suggests a combination of linear sampling and optimization. Linear sampling method (LSM) is used to recover shape and metaheuristic optimizations essential to reconstruct the inside...
